What an amazing journey it was watching the Grade 3s work on their inventions fair from start to finish. From the research process, editing, to the finished presentation the students were engaged and excited the whole way. Well done Grade 3! | |
Part of the ISS Literacy week tradition is to dress up our doors as book covers! See if you can spot your child's door here:
Today the students of Grades 1, 2 and 3 participated in some great stories from storyteller Roger Jenkins. You can see from the photos how much fun we had! Roger regularly tells stories in libraries all over Singapore. If you would like more information about what Roger does, please go to his website here. Click on the images to get the full picture!
The K1s and K2s had a real treat today listening to Sarah Mounsey reading her new book, and telling us all about the writing process from idea to publishing. Find out more about Sarah from her website here.
Grades 4 and 5 had a great time today with Sarah Brennan talking about her books and the writing process she used to write them. She had some great advice! Apparently children who read for pleasure make better writers, have more imagination, more empathy, a broader vocabulary, use more rich words in their conversations, and have more empathy than non readers. She said that books are rich food, and digital toys are popcorn. My favourite quote though is "Its impossible to read without painting pictures in your mind". Find out more about Sarah Brennan here.
Last week I was lucky enough to present a talk on reading to the PTA. It was a great turnout, and I think everyone enjoyed the treats! Here is a link to the notes, if you couldn't make it and would like some more information.
Modeling reading is the best way to get your kids to read! Have bookshelves readily available and at eye level for your children. Get obsessed with your book, and show it. Say: "Not right now, I'm reading my book!" If you are not sure how to get back into reading, here are some great tips!
